A British Standard lock is one that conforms to BS3621. The lock has to meet certain standards set out by the British Standards Institution (BSI). The standards are designed to make locks more resistant to common burglary techniques like picking, drilling and forcing.  You should have these fitted because insurance companies often require your locks to meet BS3621 standards or they wont insure you. It's important you check for the kitemark on your locks or you may not be covered by your home insurance.

With the locksmith industry unregulated at the moment, there has been an influx of rouge traders, or as we call them 'drillsmiths' advertising on platforms such as Google. These companies may advertise cheap prices and it may look appealing but the likelihood is a person with no training will turn up, unnecessarily drill your locks and charge you a hefty sum for the privilege.
